I've lived in KK for years and had never done the sunrise from the water. It was worth the early wake-up. Kinabalu in the background, the sea quiet and golden — I'm honestly glad I finally did this. The nasi goreng was better than expected too.
The clarity of the water at Dinawan is something I hadn't anticipated. Adi's reef briefing was detailed and he pointed out species I would have swum past without a second look. The barbecue lunch on the stern was a nice touch — simple food, right setting.
We took the overnight tour as a group of four. The cabin was compact but functional — I slept well and woke up already at anchor near Tiga. The mud volcano was genuinely strange and worth the morning walk. My one comment: I'd have liked slightly more time at the snake island sandspit, but that's a minor thing.
I asked before booking whether Velaris would take just two of us on the tour. They confirmed the price stays the same regardless — I appreciated the transparency. The reef at Dinawan had soft corals in very good condition and the kayaking in the shallows was relaxed and easy.
Booked the sunrise tour for my parents who were visiting from KL. They're not particularly adventurous on the water but the crew made everything comfortable. Razlan gave a calm, informative commentary the whole way and my parents came back genuinely impressed. Will book again for different family visits.
Velaris handled a dietary request (vegetarian) for me without making it an issue. The replacement meal options were well prepared. The overnight itself was peaceful — the dinner on deck with the sunset was the highlight. Comfortable enough for two nights if they ever extend the route.
How Different Guests Have Experienced Velaris
Corporate Team from Singapore
A group of six colleagues based in Singapore were spending a long weekend in Kota Kinabalu and wanted an activity that wasn't generic but also didn't require scuba certification or high fitness levels. Budget was modest but the group wanted a genuine experience.
Dinawan Full Day
The Dinawan tour suited the group exactly — no special skills required, a mix of active (snorkeling, kayaking) and passive (beach time, barbecue) elements, and a defined timeframe that fit their Saturday plan. Lina helped them schedule the booking around their travel days.
Group of 6 — Full Day
The group returned to KK in the late afternoon and described the reef snorkeling as the best part of their weekend. Three members have since enquired about the Overnight tour for a return trip. Two referred colleagues who booked the Sunrise Tour in January 2026.
Couple on Anniversary Trip
A couple visiting Sabah for a ten-year anniversary wanted something memorable but genuinely low-key — not a large group tour, not a staged beach dinner, but something they'd describe accurately to friends rather than with caveats. One partner was concerned about sea sickness.
Island Sunrise Tour
The three-hour format kept potential discomfort brief, and the protected TAR island route avoids open-sea swells. Razlan adjusted the return pace to give the partner who was uncertain about motion more time at anchor before crossing back. The crew had been briefed beforehand.
No Issues · High Satisfaction
Both guests were comfortable throughout. They described the experience as the most memorable part of their Sabah trip. They have since enquired about the Overnight voyage for a future return. The pre-departure communication was noted specifically as making a difference to their confidence before boarding.
Travel Writer, Solo Booking
A travel writer based in Kuala Lumpur was developing a piece on Sabah's coastal tourism and wanted firsthand experience of a premium yacht tour. They specifically wanted an overnight product that gave a realistic picture of what the west coast voyage involves day-to-day.
Sabah West Coast Overnight
The full two-day overnight itinerary. The writer was straightforward about their purpose and the Velaris team welcomed the transparency. No special arrangements were made — they experienced the tour as any other guest would, including meals, crew interactions, and island exploration.
Published Feature · Referrals
The piece was published in a Malaysian travel publication in February 2026 and described the Velaris approach as "the most credible small-group sea tour currently operating from KK." Three direct bookings followed in the weeks after publication. The article is available via the writer's portfolio.
